We are thrilled to announce that our beloved Ke Ala Hele Makālae, the coastal path that weaves through the stunning landscapes of Kaua‘i, has been honored with a spot in the prestigious Rails to Trails Hall of Fame.
This recognition comes from the Rails to Trails Conservancy, the nation’s largest trails advocacy organization, which celebrates multiuse trails that significantly enhance the communities they serve.
A Trail Like No Other - Kapaa Bike Path
Ke Ala Hele Makālae, which translates to "The Path that Goes by the Sea" is more than just a trail—it's a lifeline for the community. Spanning 8 miles from Lydgate Beach Park to Kuna Bay (Donkey Beach), this trail offers breathtaking views of Kaua‘i's pristine coastline and provides locals and visitors alike with a safe, accessible space for recreation, exercise, and transportation.
As the trail expands towards its goal of 17 miles, its impact on our island continues to grow, connecting even more communities and enhancing the quality of life for everyone who experiences it.
A Community Effort
This achievement would not have been possible without the collective effort of our community and partners. From the County of Kaua‘i to our dedicated team at the Department of Parks and Recreation, former Mayor Maryanne Kusaka, Kauai Path, and our Eastside community, the journey to this recognition has been a testament to what we can achieve together.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who voted for Ke Ala Hele Makālae during the public voting period. Your support helped us secure nearly 45% of the vote, standing out against other exceptional trails like the Razorback Greenway in Arkansas and the Santa Cruz Loop in Arizona.
Why This Matters
Ke Ala Hele Makālae is more than just a picturesque trail; it's a vital part of our island's identity and infrastructure. The trail provides a safe, ADA-compliant space for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoors, whether it's for a leisurely walk, a brisk bike ride, or a moment of quiet reflection by the ocean. It's also a shining example of how public, private, and community partnerships can create lasting, positive change.
With wayfinding and interpretive signage along the path, Ke Ala Hele Makālae offers not just a route but an experience—connecting people to the local culture, ecology, and history of Kaua‘i. The trail's proximity to Lydgate Beach Park, known for its calm swimming lagoons, and the Kawaihau Elevated Boardwalk, which links residents to the coast, further enhances its value to our community.
Looking Forward
As we celebrate this incredible achievement, we're also excited for what's to come. The planned expansion of Ke Ala Hele Makālae promises to extend its benefits to even more residents and visitors, fostering healthier, more connected communities across Kaua‘i.
